Broadband VLF measurements of lightning-induced ionospheric perturbations

چکیده
[1] Very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic pulses radiated by lightning are an effective tool for probing the D region ionosphere. We detect and measure the D region ionospheric disturbances caused by the strong lightning flash by analyzing the broadband VLF spectrum from lightning that occurred just before and after a nearby intense lightningdischarge.Comparing themeasured electrondensity changes to those from previous measurements and the theoretical expectations, we find the detected perturbations are consistent with the theoretically predicted ionization changes produced directly by the lightning electromagnetic pulse. Broadband very low frequency measurement of D region ionospheric perturbations caused by lightning electromagnetic pulses
[1] Prompt early/fast perturbations on narrowband sub-ionospherically propagating very low frequency (VLF) signals are the primary evidence for the direct coupling of energy released by lightning discharge to the lower ionosphere. Different mechanisms have been advanced to explain the fast ionospheric perturbations, such as heating and ionization from the lightning electromagnetic pulse (EMP) a...
متن کاملA survey of ELF and VLF research on lightning‐ionosphere interactions and causative discharges
[1] Extremely low frequency (ELF) and very low frequency (VLF) observations have formed the cornerstone of measurement and interpretation of effects of lightning discharges on the overlying upper atmospheric regions, as well as near‐Earth space. ELF (0.3–3 kHz) and VLF (3–30 kHz) wave energy released by lightning discharges is often the agent of modification of the lower ionospheric medium that...
متن کاملObservation of local and conjugate ionospheric perturbations from individual oceanic lightning flashes
Very low frequency (VLF) remote sensing observations of multifaceted local and conjugate ionospheric perturbations from geographically identified and well-characterized oceanic lightning discharges are presented for the first time. Lightning-induced electron precipitation (LEP) events are shown to produce disturbances first in the conjugate hemisphere and subsequently in the hemisphere of the c...
متن کاملLong-lasting D-region ionospheric modifications, caused by intense lightning in association with elve and sprite pairs
[1] Observations show that intense +CG lightning discharges which trigger both an elve and a sprite are associated with long-lasting conductivity modifications in the upper D-region ionosphere. They are observed as strong perturbations in VLF signals propagating through the disturbed region, manifested as LOng Recovery Early VLF events (LORE), which can last up to 30 minutes. These same ionosph...
متن کاملNighttime D region electron density profiles and variabilities inferred from broadband measurements using VLF radio emissions from lightning
[1] Lightning discharges radiate most of their electromagnetic energy in the very low frequency (VLF, 3–30 kHz) and extremely low frequency (ELF, 3–3000 Hz) bands and are, consequently, an effective tool for remotely sensing the nighttime ionospheric D region electron density profile. Using broadband lightning-generated VLF signals, we derived the night-to-night variations of the midlatitude io...
